BGK Drag Bike

Tomo just recently finished this drag bike for the drag race meeting in Sendai, Japan last weekend. it sounds super cool, and is quite fast. it was pinstriped by Sugisack Studios, and i even got to make a few small parts for it. fun!!!

先週トモさんは仙台のドラッグミーチングで出る為にこのドラッグバイクを作りました。音はすごくいいで、かなり早いです。ピンストライプは Sugisack Studios です。私もいくつかの小さい部品を作りました。楽しい！！！

Day 74

didn't get a lot done last week since my daughter was sick. i did finish most of the parts for the girder, and make a jig to help fab the links. if all goes well, i may be able to finish the girder this week. after that, about the only thing left is paint.

先週、娘はかぜをひきましたですので、余り進まなかった。でも、ガーターフォークのパーツとリンクの作成に必要のジグを完成した。運が良ければ、今週中にガーターフォークは終わります。そしたら、残りはペイントぐらいしかない。

Day 67

recently i made a little more progress on the girder.

最近、ガーターフォークにもうちょっと進みました。

got the pivot shafts turned on the lathe and also the neck stem.

旋盤でピボットシャフトとネックステムを切りました。

the finish on the outside is not as nice as i would like, but it'll clean up easy enough after they get welded into place.

外の切り出しはそんなにきれいではないですが、溶接したらすぐに奇麗に出来ると思います。

also got my exhaust pipes fabbed. they came together a lot faster and easier than i expected.

さらにエキゾーストパイプも仕上がりました。思ったより早く、簡単に出来ました。

im pretty pleased with how they turned out. they hug the frame nice and tight.

いい感じと思います。フレームに近くていいと思います。

almost got the foundry ready too.

鋳造機も、もうちょっとで出来る。

added some 2.6 mm wire in a double # pattern at 2 different heights to support the foundry cement in the lid.

蓋に入る耐火セメントを強めする為に、2.6 mmのワイヤーを２つの高さで、「#」のパッターンで付けた。

and cut a 1 inch hole in the side of the bucket with a hole saw at an angle. just a little more and we should be melting some stuff!

さらに斜めでバケツにホールソーで１インチの穴を開けました。もう少しでいろいろな物を溶かすよ！

Day 62

i haven't posted anything for a while, but i've been busy in my backyard and Tomo's garage. i can't believe 62 days have already passed. time sure flies. well, here's some more stuff i've gotten done. i've actually gotten more done, but this is all i've taken photos of.

最近余りポストしてないが、自分の庭とトモさんのガレージで忙しかった。６２日間はあっと言う間に終わりました。早いです！さあ、これはいろいろの出来た所です。本当はもっと出来ましたが、写真はこれだけです。後で写真をもっとアップしてあげます。

i got the top yoke cut to rough shape on the band saw. next is making it pretty.

フォークの上のツリーはコンターで形に出来ました。次はもっともっと奇麗にするつもりです。

i also got started on my kicker arm. it doesn't look like much right now, but i think it'll turn out well.

さらにキックアームの作成を始めた。今は余り奇麗ではないと思いますが、これから良くなると思う。

i got my dual SU carbs cleaned and rebuilt. wow, were they really dirty!!! had some parts missing too.

２つのSUキャブを掃除して、修理終わりました。汚れはすごかったですよ！いろいろのパーツも足りなかった。

and here they are all rebuilt and ready to run. i don't mind naturally aged metal, everything doesn't need to be all shiny for me, but i'm not really into the "rat bike" thing either. i want to say that the SU rebuild kit was really impressive too. it was expensive, but for all they include in the kit it was well worth it.

それから、修理後。これで付けて、はしれる状態です。全部はピカピカではなく、古い金属の味がいいと思う。ラットバイクのスタイルも私的にそんなに好きではありません。SUの修理キットはすごく良かったです。高かったが、そのキットの内容考えれば安いと思います。

Foundry

Here's the beginning of a foundry that i'm building to melt some brass. "Why?" you ask? Just stay tuned and find out - if it works out, that is.

これは真ちゅうを溶かすための鋳造機の作り初めです。「なぜ？」と思いませんか？もうちょっとで見せてあげますよ - うまく出来たら。

first i cut the top and bottom off an empty can that mushrooms came in. then i cut it open vertically. next, i cut a 2 inch circle out of the top of the lid from a 5 gallon can of transmission fluid.

最初に空のマッシュルームのキャンから上と下の所を切りました。そして、たてで切った。次ぎ、ミッション液のバケツの蓋に５２ミリぐらいの穴を切りました。

then i marked the horizontal center of the mushroom can...

そしてマッシュルームキャンの間中に線を書いて、

and cut it in half horizontally. next i wrapped a piece of 2 inch PVC pipe with a piece of cardboard and taped it into the hole i cut in the lid of the transmission can.

横に半分に切りました。次ぎ、テープで５２ミリぐらいの水道パイプの回りに段ボールを付けて、ミッション液バケツの蓋に切った穴に付けた。

then i screwed the pieces of mushroom can onto the lid.

そのあと、ねじでマッシュルームキャンの部分を蓋に付けた。

and cut in half the bottom of the mushroom can that i cut off earlier. we mustn't waste!

そして、前切ったキャンの下の部分を半分に切った。使わなきゃ！

Psycho Rally

i was invited to attend the first ever Psycho Rally at Lake Saiko, in Yamanashi Japan this past Saturday. even though this was the first year for the rally, there were about 80 people who showed up. i had a great time and got to meet a lot of friendly folks. awesome event!!!

この前の土曜日に山梨県の西湖で私は一回目のPsycho Rallyに出席するよう誘われました。今年はこのラリーの最初ですが、80人以上来ました。すごく楽しい時間を過ごしました。そして、多くの優しい人と交流できて、本当に嬉しかったです。本当に最高でした！

Day 42

had a really fun day today. since i finished the fab work on the oil tank, i was finally able to get back to work on a girder for my bike and also one for Tomo. i had previously made the bottom yoke for us both, and today i got the holes reamed in the top yokes, and the channel cut for the pivot shaft. now all i have to do is cut the yokes to shape and move on to the next part which will probably be the pivot shafts.

今日は最高に楽しかった。オイルタンクの制作終わりましたので、やっとに自分とトモさんのガーターフォークの作業に戻った。前に二人の為の下のツリーを作りました。そして今日は上のツリーの穴を開けて、ピボットシャフトのチャネルをフライスで削った。今からただ形にすれば、次のパーツに進むことが出来る。多分次ぎはピボットシャフトの制作。

Day 41

I bet you folks thought i had just given up, huh? nope. i had to work last week, but i still made a bit of progress. i'm not moving as fast as i would like to, but i'm real happy with what i've done so far.

あきらめたと思いましたか？違います。ただ先週仕事ありました。それでもちょっと進みました。もうちょっと早く進みたいんですけど、今まで出来たことについて嬉しです。

and now we have a complete oil tank. well, actually i still have to test it for leaks and do the filler work, but...

それで、オイルタンクは完成です。（でもパテの作業と漏れ試験はまだです。）

and i fabricated the upper mounting plate for the oil tank, and got it welding in place too. i'm not running a battery, so it was really simple.

さらにオイルタンクのマウンティングプレートを作って、溶接しました。バッテリーを使わないですので、すごく簡単でした。

Day 31

So here is my progress from the last few days. i'm really having a blast making my own parts. of course, i could buy a bunch of parts from a catalog, put them on, and be riding a lot sooner, but for me the best feeling is to ride a bike that i built myself, with my hands. this is the bike that i have dreamed of for so long and i intend to keep it and ride it for as long as i possibly can. i'm trying to show it the respect it deserves.

これは最近の数日間の作業です。自分のパーツ作るのがすごく楽しんでいる。もちろん、カタログから部品を買って、着けって、すぐ乗ることも出来るけど私にとって一番良い気持ちは自分で、自分の手で作ったバイクを乗ることです。このバイクは私がずっと欲しがってたバイクです。そしてこのバイクを出来るだけ長く持って、乗るつもりです。

I finished cutting the bushings for my clutch pedal and rear brake pedal out of brass. i know it may be a bit overkill to go to so much trouble for the pedals, but i want them to last a long time. this is my little mini lathe i have in the shed behind my house. i try to make sure i have plenty of stuff to make at home when i can't be at Tomo's place.

クラッチペダルとリヤーブレーキペダルのブッシュを切るのが終わりました。ペダルの為にここまでやるのがちょっとやり過ぎかもしれませんが、長く使いたいですので「いいんじゃない？」と思いました。これは私の小型旋盤です。家の裏にある小屋の中にあります。トモさんの所へ行かない時に、家で出来る作業あるように頑張っています。

i got the fabrication part of the rear fender all finished up. i loved the basic shape of the fender, and added some round bar around it to accent that. all it needs now is some body filler, primer and paint.

リヤーフェンダーの制作が終わりました。フェンダーの形大好きですので、アクセントとして回りに丸棒を付けっただけです。これからパテ、サーフェーサー、とペイントが必要です。

i got started on the oil tank by taking two fire extinguishers that i got for free...

and then spent a few hours sanding the powdercoat off them. it's amazing how strong that stuff really is. now i'm ready to do some welding.

そしてパウダーコートを取る為に数時間をかけた。パウダーコートは本当に強いよ。もう溶接する準備が終わりました。

Day 25

Slow progress recently, but here is some of the stuff i've done recently and some current pics of the Knuck.

ちょっとしか進んでいませんが、これは最近に作ったパーツと最近のナックルの写真です。

needed to remove some material from the rear caliper to make it work, so i chucked it up in the mill and shaved it down a bit.

リヤーキャリパーを使う為にちょっと削るのが必要でした。フライスのテーブルバイスに入れて、少しだけ削りました。

太陽の光に。後ろのサイドカー着いているベスパは友達「バイク・ガレージ・心の内田さん」のものです。格好いいでうね。

フェンダーマウントのバングです。写真撮るのが忘りましたがこのバングはフレームにあるプレートに溶接しました。

lower fender mount. pretty ugly right now, but i'll clean it up nicely once the engine is out.

Day 15

well, here are some pics of some of the stuff i've finished so far.

mid controls for both sides.

両側のミッドコントロール。

brass end cap for the kill switch to match the one i turned on the lathe to house the ignition switch.

イグニションスイチを入れる為に旋盤で作った真ちゅうのエンドキャップと同じようなキルスイチ・エンドキャップです。

and the brake and clutch levers (i'm going to be using a suicide clutch).

そして、ブレーキとクラッチのペダルレバー「ハンドシフトにするつもりです」。

Already rolling so to speak

this is the way it sits in my buddy's garage. he's kindly letting me have free run of his shop to get the knuck on the road. lots of work to do in a relatively little amount of time. i've got vacation time from one of my jobs until the end of September, and i'm gonna try to get this baby done in that time. i may make it, may not, but it's gonna be done right regardless.

今、友達のガレージでこんな感じです。友達がナックルを完成する為に、彼のガレージを自由に使って頂いております。やることがいっぱい、時間が少ない。９月まで一つの仕事から休みがありますので、出来ればその間に仕上がりたいです。出来るかどうか分からないですが、どうしてもちゃんとやるよ！
